The cybersecurity industry in Gothenburg - in short

Gothenburg is emerging as a growing hub for cybersecurity in Sweden, where technology, industry and societal development combine to create new opportunities. In a region defined by connected vehicles, digitalised industry and advanced communication systems, cybersecurity is not only a necessity, it is a strategic enabler of innovation and competitiveness. A strong ecosystem of companies, research environments and public actors collectively contributes to strengthening digital resilience.

The region builds on deep expertise in software engineering, AI, embedded systems and communication technologies. This provides a solid foundation for cybersecurity development, particularly in safety-critical and connected environments such as automotive, transport and industrial systems.

At the core of the ecosystem are Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg. Through their joint Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the universities conduct internationally recognised research in areas such as systems security, applied cryptography and secure software, in close collaboration with industry. Gothenburg is also part of national research initiatives within AI and digital technologies, further reinforcing the region’s competence base and talent pipeline.

Initiatives such as Campus Totalförsvar strengthen collaboration between academia, public authorities and industry in areas related to civil preparedness and national resilience. Together, these efforts contribute to knowledge development and competence supply within cybersecurity and related fields.

The cybersecurity landscape is evolving rapidly. The implementation of the EU’s NIS2 directive in Sweden, along with increased national investments in digital security, is placing clearer requirements on organisations across both public and private sectors. For companies and municipalities in Gothenburg, this creates stronger incentives and frameworks to build robust digital resilience.

The private sector plays a central role. Gothenburg hosts a growing number of specialised cybersecurity firms, alongside major industrial and technology companies with significant in-house security capabilities. The region’s strong position within connected vehicles, advanced manufacturing and digital infrastructure further drives demand for secure solutions, contributing to a future-oriented cybersecurity sector.

Why Gothenburg

For cybersecurity companies looking to establish or expand, Gothenburg offers close access to advanced industry, leading research and a collaborative innovation environment. The region’s strong concentration of safety-critical systems, connected vehicles and digitalised manufacturing creates real-world testbeds and long-term customer relationships.

With a steady talent supply from two major universities, well-established science parks and a culture of cross-sector collaboration, Gothenburg provides the conditions to develop, pilot and scale secure solutions in partnership with global companies and public actors alike.

In Gothenburg, cybersecurity is not a standalone niche. it is an integrated part of a broader, innovation-driven industrial ecosystem. For companies seeking both technical depth and strategic relevance, the region offers a stable and forward-looking platform for growth.
